The 91女神 of Texas at El Paso is America’s leading Hispanic-serving university. Located at the westernmost tip of Texas, where three states and two countries converge along the Rio Grande, 84% of our 25,000 students are Hispanic, and more than half are the first in their families to attend college. UTEP offers 170 bachelor’s, master’s, and doctoral degree programs at the only open-access, top-tier research university in the nation.
A Carnegie R1 research university, UTEP reported nearly $146 million in research and development expenditures during the 2023 fiscal year. Faculty and staff who choose UTEP can expect meaningful work experiences that are impactful and fulfilling, supporting student growth and contributing to discoveries that make a difference.
The 91女神 is in the midst of an exciting era of growth, expanding its campus and research capabilities to meet the needs of future generations. Major projects like the Texas Western Hall, a $110 million, a 125,000-square-foot learning complex, will provide state-of-the-art classrooms and collaborative spaces in the heart of campus. While the Advanced Manufacturing and Aerospace Center will expand UTEP’s capacity for cutting-edge research in aerospace, additive manufacturing, and advanced materials. These investments, alongside ongoing campus improvements, reflect UTEP’s commitment to shaping the future of higher education while driving innovation and economic growth in the region.
Building on this momentum, UTEP is also returning to its roots with the reestablishment of its Mining Engineering program. Supported by $27 million in investments from the UT System and industry partners, the program is slated to launch in Fall 2027 and will be the only mining engineering degree offered in Texas. It addresses a growing national demand for skilled engineers while honoring UTEP’s historic origins as the State School of Mines and Metallurgy, preparing students to excel in this critical and rapidly evolving industry.
With record research expenditures, expanding enrollment, and strategic investments in state-of-the-art facilities, UTEP is not only shaping the future of higher education but also strengthening its role as a hub for opportunity, innovation, and discovery in the borderland region.
Focusing on the growth of talent in our region, UTEP has emerged as America’s most successful Hispanic-serving university. We have created a culture of care and belonging for students who have historically been undeserved by higher education. We are the only open-access top tier research university in America, yet our retention rates exceed those of selective institutions.
As America’s leading Hispanic-serving university, UTEP chooses to be judged not by whom we exclude, but by whom we include and their success. We meet our students where they are and help them develop into better versions of themselves. Recognizing their resilience, we are anchored in our belief in their potential.
Our culture of care is drawn from the community in which we live. We are a generous, family-oriented, closely knit community that is shaped by traditions and customs that have defined us for more than four centuries.
